The Province of British Columbia has just announced that it will allow restaurants with liquor licenses to employ their out-of-work servers to deliver alcohol, and they're hoping it will result in jobs for servers who are out of work due to the B.C.-wide shutdown of in-lounge dining.

Contrary to dial-a-bottle delivery services, the temporary measure will only allow alocohol sales from restaurants alongside the order of a meal.

In a release, Attorney General David Eby is quoted as saying “In these extraordinary times, more British Columbians are relying on delivery services during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

He goes on to say that “Permitting licensed restaurants to hire their out of work servers to deliver liquor products as part of their food-delivery service allows the public to continue to observe social distancing measures and also offers much-needed support to these workers and businesses.”

They are encouraging the restaurants to employ laid off workers to provide this service, as they already hold their Serving It Right certification which permits them to serve alcohol to customers.

The recommendation was given to the government by the COVID-19 Business Technical Advisory Panel, made up of of representatives from the liquor and hospitality industry.
