A Burnaby man will be sentenced Jan. 9 in New Westminster for killing Afghan pop singer Nasrat Parsa after a concert in 2005.

Ahmad Seiar Froogh was found guilty earlier this year of manslaughter in B.C. Supreme Court.

He was a 19-year-old high school student at the time of the crime. He had moved to Canada from Afghanistan in 2002.

The singer was killed after performing at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

At the time, police said Parsa, 36, was approached by three men at his Kingsway hotel after the concert and punched in the head. He fell backward down some concrete stairs and hit his head, putting him in a coma caused by internal bleeding.

A man was seen running from the hotel. A police tracking dog found Froogh hiding in a lane, where he was arrested and originally charged with aggravated assault. The charge was upgraded to manslaughter after Nasra died in hospital from his injuries.
