The North Shore Winter Club’s Atom A3 hockey team may not have won gold but they still came away as champions at the Apex Winter Classic outdoor hockey tournament held earlier this month in Kelowna.

The Winterhawks earned the honour of fundraising champions, teaming up to raise $6,448 for BC Children’s Hospital, the highest total for any team. The players collected donations through their online fundraising page as well as at the club’s annual Santa Breakfast event where they cleared tables and hosted a silent auction.

Six competing teams at the Winter Classic combined to raise more than $26,000 for the hospital, bringing the total raised in the four years the tournament has been running to more than $80,000.

At the tournament, played outdoors at Apex Mountain Resort, the Winterhawks made it to the consolation final where they pulled off a dramatic 4-3 win over a team from Spokane, Wash.
