West Van FC scores VMSL Cup double

Premier men and U21s both now contending for Provincial Cups

West Van FC scored a pair of huge soccer victories recently, winning both the Vancouver Metro Soccer League's Imperial Cup and the U21 League Cup.

The premier men's team scored a 1-0 win over EDC Burnaby March 29 to claim the Imperial Cup, a trophy that was first awarded in 1913. Winger Colin Phillips scored the game's only goal in the 60th minute of play while captain and centre back Leo Nash was named player of the game.

The same two clubs met in the U21 League Cup final with West Van again gaining the edge in a 3-2 win. Dylan Van As put West Van ahead in the first half but Burnaby replied quickly and the game remained tied throughout regulation time. In overtime Evan Libke banged home a header and Andrew Milne also scored to give West Van a 3-1 lead. Burnaby closed the gap with two minutes left but couldn't find the equalizer. Centre back Libke was named player of the game.

Both West Van teams will now take part in the Provincial Cup tournament. The men's squad will host Richmond Hibernian in opening round play this Friday, April 17 starting at 7:30 p.m. at Ambleside Park.

The U21s have a first-round bye and will hit the field again April 26 at 4 p.m. at Ambleside against the winner of Metro Ford vs. West Coast FC.
