West Vancouver's Georgia Simmerling scored the second ski cross World Cup podium result of her career Sunday, winning bronze at a race held in Are, Sweden.

Simmerling won her first heat of the day and then finished second in both the quarterfinals and semifinals to earn a spot in the big final. In the big final Simmerling finished behind Switzerland's Fanny Smith and France's Ophelie David but beat out her Canadian teammate Marielle Thompson, the recently crowned Olympic champion.

"It was good today. I had to fight hard and it all came together," Simmerling said in an Alpine Canada release. "I messed up my timing on one of the features at the end of the start and I was fourth. Then Marielle (fell back) and the three of us just ended up 1-2-3."

The racers will wrap up their season this weekend at the World Cup finals in La Plagne, France. Simmerling will go in ranked seventh in the World Cup standings. She placed 14th at the 2014 Olympics and has had seven top-10 finishes this season.

"I've had a pretty consistent year, I would say. There's one more race to go and I'm hoping for a strong result again."

Her previous World Cup podium result was a silver medal showing at Innichen/San Candido, Italy in December of 2012. The Grouse Tyee Ski Club alumna, who turned 25 on March 11, switched from alpine skiing to ski cross in 2011.
