THE VGT Golf West Vancouver Shootout lived up to its name as the unique event hosted last month at Gleneagles Golf Course came down to a oneshot-to-win showdown between North Vancouver pro Bryn Parry and Vancouver's Ryan Williams.
The rapid-fire tournament pitted 10 golfers against each other in a mass start, elimination tournament with cash prizes on the line. All 10 players started on hole number 1 at the same time in one massive group and at the end of each hole the player with the highest score or, in case of a tie, the loser of a oneshot closest to the pin contest, was eliminated.
By hole number 9 only Parry and Williams were left standing, battling for the $1,000 first prize. Both players made par on the hole, meaning they'd face off from a pre-determined drop spot with closest to the pin taking the win. The shot was a 100-
yard pitch. The margin of victory was just two feet, with Williams, winner of the 2011 West Coast Golf Group ProAm, claiming the prize. Parry, winner of the 2011 Rogers Canada Cup, earned $500 for his second-place finish while Oliver Tubb from Glasgow, Scotland finished third.
The Shootout was a joint venture between the District of West Vancouver, Golf West Vancouver and the Vancouver Golf Tour.
