The bright lights and heady pressures of big matches seems to have given the Habkirk rink an extra boost.

The Coquitlam foursome spun a strong performance at the Junior Boys Curling championships two weeks ago into a winning run at the juvenile zone playdowns, held last week in Langley.

The Coquitlam Curling Club squad posted an impressive 4-1 record to advance to the B.C. Juvenile championships in Prince George.

The rink, which includes skip Kyle Habkirk, third Nicholas Umbach, second Ryan Harbrink and lead Kento Sato, edged Langley's Team Tardi with wins of 7-6 and 5-1 on Sunday.

It erased the bad bounce of a 6-5 setback to Tardi in the round-robin portion, a game decided in the eighth end.

It added just more incentive for Habkirk, who wanted to close out his juvenile age run with a trip to the B.C.s.

"We were pretty confident going in, riding a high from the juniors," he said. "I think the reason why we did so well (in the final game) was we got under their skin. We were out for blood and focused on our goal, which was to get to the juvenile provincials."

After going 2-1 in the four-team round robin, the Coquitlam crew advanced to the finals with an 8-5 victory over Team Kryski of Langley.

They needed to beat Tardi twice, and got off to a good start with three points in the first end. Langley pulled within a point after two ends, but Habkirk rolled up points in three straight ends to lead 7-2 after five frames.

Tardi closed the gap and scored two in the sixth and one each in the seventh and eighth - with a second rock looming in the house that would force an extra end.

Habkirk, however, had other ideas. With the hammer, the Coquitlam skip made the takeout to secure the first win of the double-knockout final.

They followed that with a convincing 5-1 victory to clinch the B.C. berth.

The experience gained at the junior provincials in Coquitlam, where the final was televised, gave the Habkirk rink a feel for playing important ends. They went 6-1 at that competition, and emerged quietly confident.

"Before the (junior) provincials we never played before a crowd that large or had bleachers behind us," the skip said.

"We can look at that and know we can play under those conditions and succeed."
