I write regarding Mayor Richard Walton's Oct. 17 letter to the editor, DNV Welcomes Lynn Valley Input.
My husband and I moved to the North Shore, Upper Lynn Valley, 35 years ago and we have loved living here ever since. We have lived on Coleman Street, McNair Drive, Kilmer Road and now on Dempsey Road. We are, however, astounded by the rapid changes in our neighbourhood.
I totally understand that more people have to be able to move to the Lynn Valley area, but how many single dwellings have to be sacrificed for multi-unit construction? The village atmosphere in Lynn Valley, which we have always enjoyed, is fast disappearing. Now, the new plans to tear down half of our local mall for three or possibly more highrise developments will, in my view, totally spoil the character that makes Lynn Valley so special.
District of North Vancouver council spent so much - of our - money to build the library with the village square with the aim of preserving this unique village identity. Now, they want to give in to big developers to allow for highrises. With all the new high-density housing in Lynn Valley, traffic and parking are already a problem. The proposed housing is only going to make matters worse.
Our area just cannot sustain the influx of people and cars that this housing will bring. We need a new mall, not additional housing.
I sincerely hope our opinion will be considered when the matter of the highrise construction comes up in council meetings.
