LETTER: West Vancouver council needs to broaden definition of ‘park’

Dear Editor:

Re: West Van to Attempt Sale of Donated Land, June 30 front-page story.

I am very grateful to The North Shore News for shedding light on the issues regarding Brissenden Park.

However, I am disappointed the article didn’t mention an important point – that the District of West Vancouver needs to broaden their definition of a park – a playground and a parking lot are not the only amenities that qualify a parcel of land as a park.

As I stated on June 19, at the West Vancouver council meeting, our small park is providing something very valuable in the area.  Beyond a park for people, Brissenden Park is a shelter for wild animals and nature; a mini ecosystem which has been evolving for the last 27 years and will be destroyed when the land gets developed for housing.

Talk about a step backwards as a municipality when on the North Shore and in the Lower Mainland citizens are active in safeguarding our bit of paradise from man-made air and water pollution. The council is acting in a short-sighted and reactive manner in voting to break the trust on the park – all for some immediate financial gain resulting in long-term loss.

So, on behalf of our neighbourhood, I want to thank your team once again for the good work you are doing.

Joys Chow, West Vancouver
