Dear Editor:

Re: Turf War Needs Artificial Intelligence, March 7 Laugh All You Want opinion piece by columnist Andy Prest.

I live in Lynnmour North in a housing complex that is a short walk from Digger Park forest so it will come as no surprise to you that I have a different take on the situation. This urban forest is an important eco system that filters both sound and air pollution. It is home to a wide variety of bird species. It provides shade on hot summer days for the residents. And it also provides children with a much needed unstructured play area. I’m not sentimental about the forest because as an urban forest its value is clear to me.

I have heard comments that there are lots of trees on the North Shore, so what’s the big deal about this little forest? It’s important because the dense forests on the North Shore mountains are not suitable for unstructured play. Every year people get lost in the mountains, sometimes with tragic consequences. Digger Park forest is a place where everyone from the youngest to the oldest can safely access a forest in an urban environment. This is what makes it truly unique. This is no small thing.

In fact, urban forests are a global initiative. Cities all over the world are discussing sustainable development and recognize the value of urban forests for all the same reasons I’ve stated above.

In 1886 Vancouver’s civic leaders had a vision. They set aside 400 hectares for public parkland. We know it as Stanley Park. In Lynnmour North we have a vision too. All we’re asking for is four hectares. Is that such a big thing to ask for?
