LETTER: Lovely merry-go-round ideal for summer in Lower Lonsdale

Dear Editor:

Here are my comments regarding the June 14 article about a giant waterfront ferris wheel proposed at the foot of Lonsdale for summer 2018.

North Vancouver is a community and residential area; it is not a carnival, nor is it the United States. A large waterfront ferris wheel at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue would disrupt beautiful iconic views down Lonsdale, overlooking the inner harbour and to the City of Vancouver.

Who would ride on this giant ferris wheel? Parents would be reluctant to let young children ride a four-storey-high (12.8-metre) structure. Seniors would likely have no interest. That leads young people with developing brains who make risky decisions, or drinkers from local pubs.

Personally, I had a bad experience as a child on a small ferris wheel at the PNE, where I and three others on the same ride were sick and threw up all over the ferris wheel passenger cars.

The operator left the ride running too long while he took a coffee break and watched us go up, down and around.

Expo ’86, interestingly, stopped its proposed plans for a giant ferris wheel visible at the end of Georgia Street. Instead they opted for a roller coaster and historic merry-go-round. The Expo ’86 historic merry-go-round was very popular with all ages.

I prefer a lovely merry-go-round as a better, more suitable choice for Lower Lonsdale in this community. I agree with City of North Vancouver Coun. Rod Clark that this deserves investigating.
