Re: Crack Down on Drug Use, July 19 Mailbox.

I read, with jaw-dropping disbelief, the letter written by Jerome Henen regarding the “laissez faire government attitude towards drugs.”

I realize that the North Shore News must publish letters from readers with all sorts of opinions, but at least let them be educated opinions.

First of all, no one “experiments” with fentanyl. There are low-life criminals out there who cut their product with this lethal drug and that, unfortunately, is the cause of the “massive death toll among addicts,” most of them on the Downtown Eastside.

Whatever tragic circumstances led these poor souls down the path of drug addiction, you can bet that it was not because they smoked a couple of joints when they were younger.

The government is not condoning or legalizing crack cocaine or heroin. Licensed pot dispensaries will be supplied by licensed pot growers.

Regular testing is done to insure that fentanyl does not make its way into the supply, something that has already been happening on the street and dispensaries are vigilant in asking for ID.

The government has realized that stopping people from using pot is never going to happen. They have taken steps to keep it safe for users by controlling the supply and keeping it affordable, thereby keeping the criminal element out of the loop.

Oh, and did I mention the tax revenues?

Mr. Henen needs to look at the bigger picture here. We get it that he is not a liberal. I would guess that there are plenty of conservatives out there who imbibe from time to time. Basically, if you don’t like it, don’t smoke it.
