LETTER: Dog owner should keep pet leashed and under control

Dear Editor:

To the woman who just walked by my home in Deep Cove with an off leash dog:

It started off nicely, with you noticing my cat basking in the sun of my front yard and you grabbing your off leash dog by the collar. I said “thank you” and smiled at you.

Then it went south ... you glared at me and told me that I should keep my cat indoors.

I replied, “This is my yard and my cat is entitled to enjoy it.” You said, “Well then don’t be surprised if a dog gets it,” and I said, “Your dog is supposed to be on a leash.”

I’m just so shocked that you thought that your dog had a right to be outdoors, off its leash, wandering in front of my house but my cat did not have a right to be outdoors, in his own yard and entitled to freedom from harm from your unleashed dog.

I have to say that I’m very disappointed, and somewhat shocked, at your attitude and our interaction. I hope that, wherever you live, you are able to enjoy your yard without strangers passing by and telling you how you should or should not behave at your own home. I also hope that you will start obeying the leash law so that others you encounter in your travels do not have to protect their children or pets while you allow your dog all the freedom you think it is entitled to have.

There is no “leashed cat” law and there is no law against my cat being outside in my own yard. There is, however, a law that says you must have your dog leashed and under your control at all times.
