Dear Editor:

Re: DNV Path Leads to Kirkstone Road Proposal, Feb. 9 news story.

It was with great concern that I read the article in the North Shore News that the District of North Vancouver council voted 6-1 in favour of turning the well-lit, well-used, popular, well-maintained footpath through Kirkstone Park into a road.

The comment by a councillor that the (park) dedication policy only applies to a large section of park space and that cutting off a slice to make a road does not come under the dedication policy leads me to understand that dedication gives very little protection to our precious green space.

This is the start of a very slippery slope. Our so-called dedicated parks could disappear over a space of time, a slice at a time, “death by a thousand cuts.” Plus how many trees will come down to accommodate this road?

Editor’s note: The rezoning applies to the approximately 140-metre long path that juts eastward from the main body of the park. The rezoning is subject to a negative petition ending March 12.
