LETTER: Cyclists should be licensed to ride

Dear Editor: I note that recent issues of the North Shore News have ads from local districts to remind business owners and pet owners to renew their licences. I never saw a reminder for cyclists to renew. Oh yes, I forgot.

Dear Editor:

I note that recent issues of the North Shore News have ads from local districts to remind business owners and pet owners to renew their licences.

I never saw a reminder for cyclists to renew. Oh yes, I forgot. They don't need a licence, nor do they need insurance.

As for the law, it doesn't seem to apply to them either.

Now, don't get me wrong, I do see cyclists obeying the law but they are definitely in the minority. So, pet licences, yes; business licences, yes; car licences, yes; motorcycle licence, yes; driver's licences, yes; building permit (a licence by another name), yes; off-road vehicle registration (another fancy name for a licence), yes; bicycle licence, no. What contribution are cyclists making to the cost of all these bicycle lanes? Or to put it another way, in what way are they contributing to the cost that the rest of us are not?
