Dear Editor:

My family and I have been avid boaters all our lives and spend time at McNab Creek (on the Sunshine Coast) when weather allows. We have used the dock at the log dump in the past when room is available; otherwise, we are content to anchor out. We fish for salmon, sea-run trout, cod, prawns and crab when in season. We also hunt the valley as well as forage for mushrooms and berries when in season.

This valley has endured many industries and somehow keeps trying to rebound. This year, Burnco installed signage that is very disappointing to us. It basically says you are not welcome as well as cuts off access to the valley. You can’t use the dock or even access the shoreline of the estuary; signs are everywhere.

We would like to see access broadened instead of restricted. It is a jewel that should be used by the people instead of destroyed by industry.

This valley just went through a major run-of-river project that has changed the landscape as well as the natural run of the water into the river. I feel we should be enhancing the river to raise the fish numbers and control erosion. We should be installing outhouses and camping areas to allow more people to access and enjoy a piece of paradise on the Lower Mainland’s doorstep.

Let’s save this gem for the future of Howe Sound.
