A 13-year-old North Vancouver boy is at risk of permanent eye damage after being struck by an egg Monday night.

The boy was walking home after being out with some friends at approximately 9:30 p.m. when a black Honda CRV approached him as he neared Canyon Heights Elementary School by the intersection of Highway Boulevard and Belvista Crescent.

Suddenly the boy felt a sharp pain in his right eye. The car drove away and he realized he’d been struck by an egg.

“He doesn’t know the vehicle, it’s not like he was in an argument with anybody – didn’t say anything to them, they didn’t say anything,” said Cpl. Richard De Jong, spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP. “Very random, at this point.”

The boy then walked home with one hand over his eye and his parents took him to the hospital.

“These injuries are serious. It’s a criminal offence – this is assault causing bodily harm. This boy could have permanent eye damage, all for moments of very reckless criminal behaviour,” De Jong said.

North Vancouver police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect vehicle along with anyone involved in the incident.

They are also putting out a call for an individual described as a Good Samaritan that stopped shortly after the boy was egged and asked if he needed a ride home or to the hospital, to which the boy declined.

“We’d like to talk to him because he may have seen something,” De Jong said.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, referencing file #2107-21838.
