West Vancouver Fire and Rescue crews had to come to the aid of three 12-year-olds who found themselves in over their heads in Cypress Creek.

The call came in around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday after the youths had gone for a dip but soon realized they wouldn’t be able to scale the cliffs to get back out.

“They started to get quite cold and decided it was probably time to go home,” said assistant fire chief Jeff Bush. “They realized it was quite a bit steeper for them to get out.”

West Vancouver Fire and Rescue sent 15 members to the 4100 block of Burkehill Road to scramble down to the kids using ladders and bring them back up to dry land.

“And I’m happy to report there were no injuries. They were just cold,” he said.

The area is used by some swimmers but isn’t known to be a hotspot for rescue calls, Bush said.

Because the creek is constantly flowing and shaded by the canyon, the water tends to be very cold, he added.
