District of West Vancouver council has approved a new 25-year plan for the community.

Council voted unanimously Monday night to pass the new official community plan following a two-hour public hearing that saw the planning document largely supported by members of the community.

The plan anticipates the district will grow by 5,000 new housing units by 2041 or 0.87 per cent per year. Most of the new housing would be added within short distances of existing town centres like Ambleside and Horseshoe Bay, although the total number of new units in those areas will be subject to future local area plans made in consultation with the community. The OCP also includes a new village centre to be built on the slopes of Hollyburn Mountain.

The goal of the OCP is to make West Vancouver a home for local employees as well as young families and local seniors looking to downsize.
