Sayonara Nagano:
Snowboarders Maëlle Ricker and Darren Chalmers returned to the North Shore after competing in the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. The inaugural year snowboarding was a medal sport, West Van’s Ricker, 19, weathered rainy conditions and finished fifth in her first Olympics. Chalmers’ Whistler roommate Ross Rebagliati won the Gold medal in men’s snowboarding. He was temporarily disqualified after THC was found in a blood test but the ruling was overturned on the basis that marijuana was not on the list of banned substances. Ricker was going up to Whistler to ride some powder while Chalmers was headed down to California for more competitions.

CapWest buy mulled:
North Vancouver District council was investigating the acquisition of the 4.3-acre CapWest Athletic Club site at Fullerton and Capilano Road. Residents in the area wanted the site rezoned for public recreational use. The site had closed in June, 1997, after a consultant’s report said the 42-year-old facility needed $4 million in repairs.

NVC goes for pricey laptops:
Two councillors opposed the leasing of high-end Toshiba notebook computers (with CD-Rom and 32 megabytes of memory) for $37,800. Each notebook would cost $4,500 over a three-year lease.

West Van residents clash with traffic conclusions:
An independent traffic study of the area surrounding West Vancouver Secondary recommended increasing parking at the school from 260 to 280 spaces, widen 17th Street access lane to accommodate  two-way traffic, install speed bumps as well as a physical barrier on 17th Street to protect pedestrians and reopen KIngs Avenue access to two-way traffic.

D.O.A. headlines all-ages show at Seylynn Hall:
Two generations of punk rockers celebrated D.O.A.’s 20th anniversary with an all-ages gig at North Vancouver’s Seylynn Hall. Lynn Valley’s d.b.s., The Weakerthans and Pigment Vehicle were also on the bill.

Thrill Squad brings act Portside:
Lynn Valley’s Gord Badanic and his band Thrill Squad played their first-ever North Shore show at the Portside Room at the Seven Seas Restaurant. The last time Badanic had played locally was at Hillside Secondary with Go For 3.
