A Honda Civic logging speeds of 140 km/h during a police chase that started in Surrey early Thursday morning was eventually stopped by a spike belt in West Vancouver.

The incident started with Surrey RCMP responding to a break-and-enter call in the Guildford area just after 1 a.m. Police officers noticed a suspicious vehicle, a Honda Civic, but were not sure if it was related to the break-and-enter, according to Surrey RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Scotty Schumann.

“They (two suspects in the vehicle) noticed us coming into the area en masse, obviously, and decided it was time to hightail it and get out of there,” said Schumann, adding the assailant hit a police cruiser in the process.

A police pursuit ensued through multiple municipalities along Highway 1. Once the Civic reached West Vancouver at the Westmount Road exit, West Vancouver police officers were waiting with a spike belt, which crippled the vehicle.

“But he (the male suspect) crashed almost immediately because of his deflated tires; he crashed into a cement barrier,” said Schumann.

At no point were people driving on the highway at risk during the police chase, according to Surrey RCMP.

“If at any time we felt that somebody was in danger we would have terminated the pursuit,” said Schumann.

Surrey RCMP took a 25-year-old Maple Ridge man and his passenger, a 23-year-old Coquitlam woman, into custody. The Civic had been stolen by the fugitives, who are known to police.

Corey Brandon William Bourjeois is charged with multiple offences including dangerous driving, fleeing from police, possession of stolen property and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. Schuman said Bourjeois faces a charge for possession of a noxious spray, most likely bear spray.

Chantel Ann-Marie Couture, meanwhile, is charged with being the occupant of a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.
