A smoke-free environment is imminent aboard BC Ferries.

The company is reminding passengers that as of Monday, Jan. 22 smoking will no longer be permitted on any of its vessels or terminal properties, according to a news release from the company.

The move to get people to butt-out aboard its ferries is being introduced to “support the health and wellness of its customers and employees,” the release notes.

The new policy applies to the smoking of tobacco and any other substance, including e-cigarettes.

BC Ferries first announced the incoming new policy change last summer, in order to give passengers and employees who smoke time to adjust to the new rules, the release states.

Back in October, BC Ferries also enacted a new policy barring passengers from staying in their vehicle when parked on enclosed ferry decks, in line with Transport Canada regulations. Passengers with special circumstances who want to stay in their cars may request at the ticket booth to be placed on the upper vehicle deck, and BC Ferries will try and accommodate the request.
