A woman who fell asleep at the wheel while driving off an exit for Highway 1 in West Vancouver Thursday morning was lucky to escape with minor injuries.

The 62-year-old woman was driving home from the airport when she nodded off behind the wheel as she took the Caulfeild exit shortly before 9 a.m., said Sgt. Erin Findlay of the West Vancouver Police Department.

The Jaguar she was driving hit a median on the off-ramp, then a utility pole, which came out and landed on a second vehicle, a BMW.

The driver of that car – a 75-year-old West Vancouver woman – was also unharmed.

Total damage to the two vehicles involved in the accident is estimated at $88,000.
