Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service crews rescued a hypothermic man who was stuck in mud up to his armpits on Monday afternoon.

AFRS Deputy Chief Ron Hull said that the department got the call about the man trapped in the Willband Creek bed at Ravine Park off Switzer Avenue at 1: 16 p.m.

Firefighters arrived to find the man, who appeared to be middle-aged, shirtless and immersed in mud and water down an embankment.

"We don't know how long he had been there," said Hull.

"He was a little bit combative and disoriented and unable to communicate."

It's not clear how the man, who was located away from any marked trails or footpaths, came to be in the area, said Hull.

The firefighters physically pulled him from the creek bed and up the hill in a stretcher before he was transported to hospital.
