There is no substitute for the brakes.

A Porsche seemed to confuse a driveway for a speedway Monday afternoon, lurching off the driveway and through a hedge before crashing into a retaining wall on the 800 block of Burley Drive, according to West Vancouver police.

The driver, a 44-year-old West Vancouver resident, blamed brake failure.

“We don’t have a complete explanation, whether it was just the wrong foot on the wrong pedal or whether there actually was mechanical fault with the vehicle,” said West Vancouver Police Department spokesman Const. Jeff Palmer.

An examination at the scene found no indication of brake failure, Palmer said.

The damage to the wall is about $5,000, according to Palmer. Fixing the 911 Porsche will probably cost around $30,000, Palmer said.

No charges have been filed.
