West Vancouver police say speed was likely a factor in a single-vehicle collision that left the driver dead Sunday afternoon.

Just after 1 p.m., a 43-year-old Vancouver man was driving south on Taylor Way when he crashed his minivan into the main support column at Park Royal’s overpass just north of Marine Drive.

“It appears the collision was at a high rate of speed,” Palmer said. “The airbags had deployed. Unfortunately, the person was declared deceased at the scene.”

Police rerouted traffic to Keith Road for roughly five hours while the Integrated Collision and Reconstruction Service investigated the scene.

The B.C. Coroners Service will also investigate to see if there were any other underlying medical causes prior to the crash.

“The investigation will look into all possible explanations. It’s very tragic that one life is lost,” Palmer said. “It’s very fortunate that there weren’t other injuries or worse involved.”

Police say there were several witnesses who have come forward but anyone else who saw the crash is asked to contact West Vancouver Police Department.
