A 57-year-old North Vancouver woman is dead after being hit by an SUV while crossing Fell Avenue.

The woman, as well as a 49-year-old man, were walking across the marked, controlled crosswalk when a Land Rover crashed into both of them.

The SUV driver had been making a left turn onto Fell from West Third Street.

Responders arrived on the scene shortly after 10:30 a.m. on May 31 and rushed the woman to Lions Gate Hospital. She eventually succumbed to her injuries while in hospital, according to police.

The male pedestrian was treated for minor injuries before being cleared to return home.

The driver, a 71-year-old North Vancouver man, remained at the scene while police investigated.

The tragedy is a reminder to drivers and pedestrians to be careful, according to North Vancouver RCMP Cpl. Richard De Jong.

“Check both ways, don’t be on your phone. Be vigilant, even as a pedestrian,” he said. “Left turns are notoriously high-risk turns.”

While West Third Street and Fell Avenue isn’t a particularly dangerous intersection, De Jong said there has been more foot traffic in the area as of late.
