After more than a decade of planning and scrounging for funds, construction on the new Argyle Secondary can now begin.

District of North Vancouver council voted unanimously Monday night to grant building permits for the project – the last bureaucratic hoop for the North Vancouver school district to jump through.

Construction is expected to begin this spring and last until 2020. The existing building is 57 years old and at high risk of collapse in an earthquake.

Although there were some concerns about construction impacts, and access and egress, as well as a lack of provincial funding for a new artificial turf field, council was enthusiastic in its support.

Coun. Doug MacKay-Dunn said he favoured replacing the school as far back as 1999 when he was chairman of the North Vancouver school board.

“Sometimes renovations aren’t good enough,” he said. “The best renovation is a D9 Cat (bulldozer).”
