The road to Lynn Headwaters Regional Park – and 175 parking spots – should be restored and ready for traffic in August following a nine-month closure, according to the District of North Vancouver.

Following a July construction period, the district is hoping to have the road ready by the August long weekend, according to district public safety manager Fiona Dercole.

Geotechnicians doing a subsurface analysis found the soil beneath the road is unstable, leading to the road’s closure in late 2016. The $700,000 project will mitigate what had been an unacceptable landslide risk while enhancing drainage and repaving the road, Dercole said.

Crews are slated to begin ground stabilizing soil nailing in July. The process – which is a similar principle to adding rebar to a concrete structure – involves driving slender, hollow nails into the ground and anchoring them in place.

Replacing the early 1900s-era fill under the road was initially pegged to cost about $2 million by the district’s geotechnical consultants.

New parking limits on Dempsey, Lynn Valley and Kilmer roads as well as Underwood Avenue are to stay in place during construction.

“We recognize that the parking was a problem even before we closed the road,” Dercole said, emphasizing that the district plans to work with Metro Vancouver on parking strategies. While the road remains open to pedestrians and cyclists, there will likely be a “few days” during construction when the road will be completely closed, according to Dercole.
