Fans of walking up stairs for an hour will need to wait a while longer to get their vertical fix on the Grouse Grind as Metro Vancouver sent out a reminder today that the trail is still closed for the winter due to unsafe conditions.

There are still large amounts of snow and ice on the upper portions of the trail, said Metro Vancouver communications officer Greg Valou in a release. Workers have begun trail maintenance on lower sections of the trail and will progress upwards as spring thaws allow.

Climbers who ignore trail closures put themselves, maintenance staff and North Shore Rescue members at risk, Valou said, adding that for safety reasons maintenance crews must suspend their work if hikers are spotted on the trail. The Grind will open when maintenance work is completed and the entire trail is free of ice and snow.
