Free summertime concert series returns to Shipyards

It looks gloomy outside right now, but at least there’s something to look forward to this summer.

It looks gloomy outside right now, but at least there’s something to look forward to this summer.

The City of North Vancouver earlier this month voted unanimously in favour of continuing to partner with Twilight Markets for the July and August Summer Sessions concert series in 2016 at the Shipyards.

Last summer, the city partnered with Twilight Markets for a summer concert series that included nine free concerts on Saturday nights at the Shipyards in July and August. The concerts featured a range of musical styles, from R&B and jazz to disco funk and rock.

Along with the free tunes, there was also a beverage garden, food trucks and artisan booths set up for concert goers.

In 2015, despite some bad-weather nights, the concerts attracted between 500 and 700 people to dance and enjoy the music.

According to a staff report, “The City received a number of tweets, emails and verbal comments from the public about the appreciation for the concert series.”

The total cost of city funding for the 2015 concert series was $60,000 and will be the same in 2016.

The total budget for the series is expected to be  $80,000-$90,000, with the extra cost being picked up by Twilight Markets.

As well as the $60,000, the city will provide site maintenance and event promotion.
