A construction worker needed a lift from the fire department late Friday night after a nasty foot injury left him at the bottom of a six-metre trench.

District of North Vancouver fire department rushed to the construction site near Keith Road and Brooksbank Avenue at 3 a.m. Friday night to help the worker.

Having sustained a “significant foot injury,” the worker was unable to climb out of the trench, which resembled a “concrete bunker,” according to District of North Vancouver fire department assistant chief David Dales.

After two firefighters climbed into the trench to stabilize the worker and assess his injuries, the fire department used their quint truck – a combination ladder truck and fire engine – to lower a basket stretcher.

The worker was in an ambulance by 3:30 a.m., according to Dales.

If the worker’s injuries were more critical, the department could have done a faster “grab and go,” rescue. However, in this case the worker was best served by a slow, stable lift, according to Dales.

“It’s something we train for all the time,” he said.
