A 34-year-old man died Wednesday afternoon after an excavator he was operating toppled in a Chippendale Road construction zone.

Workers were clearing rock and blasting at a site in the 3100 block of Chippendale Road in the British Properties to prep for residential construction when the excavator tipped on a steep slope.

The worker was thrown from the cab, said Const. Jeff Palmer, spokesman for the West Vancouver Police Department.

Emergency crews were called in but the excavator operator was pronounced dead at the site.

The identity of the man has not been released.

West Vancouver police are set to assist WorkSafeBC, which is now handling an investigation expected to take between three and six months.

WorkSafeBC will be looking for the cause of the accident and ways to prevent a similar tragedy from occurring, said media relations manager Trish Knight Chernecki.
