A West Vancouver elementary student is in hospital after being struck by a driver on 15th Street.

Police say the girl was crossing the street at Lawson Avenue on her way from Ridgeview Elementary when the driver of a BMW X1 hit her at the intersection around 3:15 p.m.

“The young girl was actually thrown a fair distance … probably 60 to 70 feet,” said Const. Jeff Palmer. “Fortunately, at this point, the injuries appear to be bruising and abrasions.”

The young girl was conscious and speaking to officers and paramedics following the collision, Palmer said.

Although pedestrians have the right of way to cross the street, Palmer said the investigation was in its very early stages and no determination had been made as to whether driver or pedestrian error was the cause.

The driver stayed at the scene and is co-operating with police. The victim is undergoing tests in hospital and is with her family, Palmer said.
