A Dundarave homeowner made a $100,000 mistake Monday.

A daytime thief broke into a house on the 2600 block of Haywood Avenue through an unlocked, ground-level sliding door. After that, it was “away to the races,” said West Vancouver Police Department spokesman Const. Jeff Palmer.

The thief ransacked an unsecured safe and walked out with a pile of cash and jewelry, Palmer said.

Because the homeowners had been away for much of the day, police could only say the theft occurred “at some point in the daytime,” Palmer said.

Police have been canvassing the neighbourhood and checking surveillance video in the hopes someone captured an image of the sliding door burglar, Palmer said.

While secondary locks can let in a breeze and keep the house somewhat secured, the best method for keeping the house safe is the simplest one, according to Palmer.

“Lock your doors, please.”
