New driver ticketed for excessive speeding in West Van

A 20-year-old new driver from Vancouver had his car impounded for seven days and was ticketed for excessive speeding after being clocked driving 140 kilometres per hour in West Vancouver Feb. 20.

A West Vancouver police officer pulled over the driver of a 2018 BMW 430i at approximately 12:30 a.m. Tuesday morning on Highway 1 neTaylor Way.

“In addition, when offences like that involve a new driver they can be reviewed by the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles and the superintendent can consider a driving prohibition in addition to the vehicle impound,” said West Vancouver police spokesman Jeff Palmer.

A 38-year-old North Vancouver man was also the recipient of an excessive speeding violation Tuesday evening after being clocked going 140 km/h in a 90 km/h zone on Highway 1 at approximately 9:15 p.m.

The driver was served with an excessive speeding ticket and was additionally given violation tickets for an unsafe lane change and distracted driving for being on his cell phone.

The driver’s 2015 Nissan has also been impounded for seven days.

“If you’re traveling at speeds well in excess of the posted speed limit you are dramatically reducing the amount of time that you will have to react to something unexpectedly happening on the road in front of you,” Palmer said. “You put yourself at much greater risk, you put other people around you at much greater risk.”

Fifty-two vehicles have been impounded for excessive speeding in West Vancouver so far this year, he noted.

The distracted driving violation was actually attributable to a 38-year-old North Vancouver driver who was also pulled over for excessive speeding Feb. 20.
