North Vancouver RCMP say a Vancouver woman driving a Hyundai Elantra was ticketed after hitting a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk in Lower Lonsdale.
Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the intersection of St. Georges Avenue and First Street around 6:15 p.m. Friday evening following the collision.
Police say the driver, a 25-year-old Vancouver woman, was southbound on St. Georges when she struck the victim.
“She was found with a head injury due to having impact with the driver’s side front windshield of the vehicle,” said Cpl. Richard De Jong, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman. “Due to the weather conditions – rain, lack of light – the victim was not seen in the crosswalk,” De Jong added, quoting from the police file.
The victim, a 74-year-old West Vancouver woman was taken to Lions Gate hospital where the ER doctor determined the head injury was “external and non-life threatening,” De Jong said.
Police issued the driver a $167-violation ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian.
“Look twice before you cross the road and if you’re driving through an area that’s marked as a pedestrian crosswalk, be extra vigilant,” De Jong said.
Please, pedestrians! It’s dark, it’s raining, and visibility is terrible! Assume cars can’t see you! You may have the right of way, but not like this! It’s terrible to see this happen! #NorthVan #news1130 corner of 1st and St George’s #accident pic.twitter.com/u8pphLR4RL
