Four years after buying a large Ambleside property, West Vancouver council is getting around to the discussion of what it should build there.

The District of West Vancouver bought the land across the street from the ice arena, at 2195 Gordon Ave., from Vancouver Coastal Health in April 2014 for $16.07 million and has been eying it for affordable housing. It was assessed in 2017 at $24.3 million.

Council voted unanimously Monday night to spend up to $50,000 from its affordable housing endowment fund to hire outside consultants to help determine what kind of housing project might go on the site and who might help pay for it.

Coun. Christine Cassidy said she was eager to see a report come forward because the land has the potential to help the district “correct some of its basic housing issues.”

Coun. Craig Cameron said he would be keeping an open mind and that he wanted to hear from the public on the matter but, he was expecting “significant amounts” of rental accommodation on the property. There is no timeline for when the study is expected to be complete.
