A Surrey man is in custody after he apparently opted to have a snooze midway through a break-and-enter in North Vancouver.

A resident on the 100-block of West Second Avenue came home around 10 p.m. Tuesday night and was shocked to find a stranger asleep on his couch.

The suspect, according to North Vancouver RCRCMP, got access to the ground-level condo through a sliding glass door and proceeded to help himself to food and personal items belonging to the owner including putting on one of the alleged victim's t-shirts.

After coming home and finding the snoozing suspect, who had allegedly loaded up a backpack full of the homeowner's belongings, the man called 9-1-1. Police arrived and arrested the drowsy suspect, who was himself rather surprised, without incident.

"He thought he'd have a power nap," said Cpl. Richard De Jong, North Vancouver RCRCMP spokesman. "It's certainly unusual.. .. It was raining that night. He probably thought 'This guy's not coming home' and took it upon himself to have a bit of a rest before heading back out into the cold. The next thing you know, he fell asleep." De Jong said the suspect had been in the home for "several hours" before being caught.

Faris Omerovic, 24, is now charged with one count of breaking and entering and committing an indictable offense.

Omerovic is known to police, De Jong said. He is due back in court for a bail hearing on Dec. 23.
