With news that will make some people say, “Well duuh!” and others bite their knuckles in frustration, an official with the Langley Events Centre has confirmed that the Lingerie Football League will not be coming to the facility this fall.
LEC director of business development Jared Harman said he was contacted by the LFL about the possibility of it moving into the multi-use centre in Willoughby.
“It was a quick conversation,” Harman said. “It’s not something we feel is a good fit for the facility at this time.”
Harman said he is waiting to see which venue the league will play out of.
Mitch Mortaza, chairman and founder of the league, told the Vancouver Province last week that he has come to a verbal agreement with a Lower Mainland facility to host a Vancouver team.
Mortaza declined to say what building that might be, but it won’t be either B.C. Place Stadium or Rogers Arena.
B.C. Place doesn’t have any weekend dates available in 2012 and Rogers Arena decided against the LFL.
“We have come to verbal terms with a building in B.C., which we will be announcing as early as next week that will house the Vancouver franchise,” said Mortaza.
The Pacific National Exhibition, which could host games in the Pacific Coliseum, is not involved with the LFL, said a spokes-woman.
The next largest facilities would be the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Complex, which seats about 7,000, and the LEC, where a sellout for lacrosse recently attracted 5,200 fans.
Abbotsford Sports Complex general manager Jason Bumenfeld said “we’ve had discussions with them and would be happy to have them there.”
Nothing has been finalized, he said.
Two games will be played in B.C. in the Canadian edition of his league this fall, said Mortaza, who hopes to expand to three to four games the following year.
The league uses a 50-yard field and features seven women per side in shoulder pads, knee pads, helmets – and lingerie.
The Canadian LFL was announced in September with the stated intention of starting play in the fall of 2012.
Mortaza said the 2012 LFL schedule will run from Aug. 25 to Nov. 17, with conference playoffs scheduled for Nov. 17.
The Canadian Lingerie Bowl championship goes Nov. 24 in Toronto, likely at the Ricoh Coliseum that seats 7,000 to 8,000.
