In a cruelly ironic turn of events this week, one of the police officers taking part in next week’s Cops-for-Cancer fundraiser has had his bike stolen in West Vancouver.

The unidentified off-duty Mountie was shopping in Park Royal Thursday when a thief cut the $1,800 bicycle from a rack mounted on his car, according to West Vancouver police.

The high-end Gary Fisher road bike had been leant to the officer while he trained for the 900-kilometre charity event, organized by the Canadian Cancer Society as a way to raise money to fight childhood cancers.

Police expect a replacement to be found before the tour begins Sept. 19.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the WVPD.
