For a good cause, Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender is going to feel the heat.
It’s not because this is an election year. Fassbender doesn’t have to vie for his seat until November 2011.
No, Langley City’s mayor will feel the heat Sept. 24 when he’s the subject of a roast.
He’s agreed to the ribbing in the name of charity, to raise money for the Langley Lodge, the not-for-profit seniors care facility downtown.
“This is probably the biggest event we have ever taken on,” said Patrick Matiowski, the lodge’s fundraising director.
On the guest list of those who have agreed to roast Fassbender are some heavyweights.
There’s MLAs Rich Coleman and Mary Polak, Rick Hansen, Peter Legge, Peter Luongo, Jim McGregor, and adman Frank Palmer.
Tickets are already on sale at the lodge or through the lodge website (www.langleylodge.org) for $150 apiece. There are only 400 tickets available, and the fundraising dinner and roast takes place at the Coast Hotel & Convention Centre.
The evening will have a gala feel with men and women informal wear. How swanky will it get?
Matiowski said there will be a diamond dig, a type of game in which everyone has a game piece. Some people will come away with shiny rocks but only one person wins the half-carat diamond.
There are various other donations that will help the lodge raise funds, including spa and resort getaways, a Swarovski crystal necklace, a sturgeon fishing trip and more.
Someone will even win a chance to be a mayor for a day.
