NEARLY three out of five Canadians want to do away with plastic shopping bags, according to an online poll of 1,019 Canadians conducted by Angus Reid. Toronto, Ont., is scheduled to ban the bag in 2013, but critics charge the carry-out bags account for less than one per cent of the city's waste. Approximately 60 per cent of British Columbians want to ban the bag, according to the survey. Are plastic bags the lesser of several environmental evils, or are they a landfill-clogging menace that needs to be outlawed?
