FOR the first time since Pope Celestine V handed in his papal papers in 1294, a head pontiff has willingly resigned.

Pope Benedict XVI is scheduled to trade the chair of St. Peter for a La-Z Boy recliner at the end of the month. Whether it's a case of heavy lies the mitre or a matter of good private sector opportunities for the formerly infallible, his decision has shocked the Vatican.
