Rogers Communications has released five new possible locations for a cell tower near the busy intersection of Taylor Way and Highway 1 in West Vancouver.

The options are in response to community residents, who dialed up opposition to the cell provider's original proposal of a 29.5-metre tower between Highway 1 and the westbound Taylor Way offramp. They will be presented at an open house at Hollyburn Country Club June 21 at 6 p.m.

District council turned down that first proposal in January, saying the tower would be an eyesore and that they hadn't been properly consulted. Councillors asked Rogers to come back with more options to let the community have a say.

"To our knowledge, and to Rogers' knowledge, it's the first time the cell provider has gone out to the community with more than one site. It's usually: 'This is where we want to put it, what do you think?'" said Geri Boyle, community planner for West Vancouver. Staff feel Rogers has lived up to what was requested of them by council, she said. "We've had to encourage them, but they've done it, so we're pleased they've done that and are involving the community."

The new options include: a site across the highway between the eastbound on-ramp and a line of trees; the roundabout at the north end of Taylor Way; the Taylor Way median immediately north of the highway; and the property of the St. David's United Church. A final option would place the tower in a park at Eastcot and Burhill Roads inside the British Properties.

Heights of the proposed poles vary between 30 and 40 metres.

But several of the proposed locations are just as obtrusive, if not more so, to area residents, said Max Nikpay, president of the British Properties Area Residents Association.

"It was their position they don't want something right in their face, and now we're talking about the church lot or right in the middle of Taylor Way," he said.

"The way I'm looking at these slides I don't think anybody is going to agree with that."

Rogers spokeswoman Marina Guy said the tower can't be located far from Taylor Way, as several residents and councillors had requested, because that's where calls are getting dropped.

"This will only increase," she said. "It's a balance meeting the needs of the community and also meeting the needs of our network."

She said the tower can't be located in treed areas without being built significantly taller, as foliage blocks wireless signals.

The deadline for submissions is June 29.
