NEW CHARGES APPROVED

Six new charges have been approved against a Maple Ridge man accused of sexually abusing children at his wife's home daycare.

Meanwhile, charges against another man accused of alleged sexual assault at a separate Maple Ridge home daycare were stayed, and a trial planned for December was cancelled.

WRONG VEHICLE CHOSEN

A would-be thief got the surprise of his life when he was arrested by an off-duty Ridge Meadows RCMP officer Wednesday morning after riffling through the belongings in a vehicle. It started at about 2: 30 a.m. Wednesday when Const. Ryan Henley was woken up by the barking family dog and saw a suspicious man in the vehicle. Dressed in pyjamas and with bare feet, he chased the startled suspect and arrested him a short distance away.

WATERFRONT DISCUSSED

Hammond Cedar might be willing to open up land it owns or controls along the Fraser River for public access, said Ric Slaco, vice-president and chief forester of Interfor, in a presentation to Maple Ridge council on Monday. "For over 100 years this business has been part of the fabric of our community," said Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin. "They are an important part of our history and our future."

PRIVATE SCHOOL TO GROW

Maple Ridge council decided Tuesday to forward an application to the Agricultural Land Commission from Meadowridge School to expand their non-farm use. The school would like to expand its enrolment from 600 to 800, but because of a covenant, needs the ALC's approval first.
