NORTH Vancouver artist Geoff Ross has some of his art work for sale in this year's Circle Craft Christmas Market which takes place Nov. 7 to 11 at the Vancouver Convention Centre West. More than 300 artisans from across the country will show their work (including pottery, wood, glass, metal, fibre, fashion and jewellery) in the 39th edition of the popular seasonal fair.

All Ross' pieces are hand-carved primarily using reclaimed cedar and copper. "My work doesn't necessarily represent animals or spirits found in traditional native art, but my art is neither traditional nor native," he says. "When I was two, my parents adopted my younger brother whom is of Interior Salish descent. As my parents wanted my brother to be connected to his heritage, the entire family was exposed to Native art and culture. As an artist inspired by First Nation's art and contemporary design, my goal is to present abstract images asking the viewer what they symbolize. Hopefully, every individual will see something different."

Ross, self-taught and starting his sixth year of designing and carving, works from his lower Lonsdale studio. Pieces at the Circle Craft Christmas Market will be priced from $50 - $1,200. For more information visit indigenousinfluences.com.
