Driver collides with power pole, lamp post in early morning collision on Capilano Road

Neither impairment nor speed were factors in the crash, North Vancouver RCMP say

Around a dozen households had their power knocked out early Tuesday morning, after the driver of a white SUV collided with a power pole on Capilano Road.

After receiving a call around 4:30 a.m., North Vancouver RCMP attended the scene to find the totalled vehicle near the intersection of Route 1 East and Capilano.

Travelling in the northbound lane, the vehicle struck both a hydro pole just south of the intersection as well as a lamp post right at the intersection, where the SUV came to a stop, according to police.

Neither impairment nor speed were factors in the single-vehicle accident, said Const. Mansoor Sahak, North Van RCMP spokesperson. Instead, police suspect “medical reasons” as a potential cause of the crash.

The driver received only minor injuries and was not in serious condition following the incident, Sahak said.

The northbound turning lane has been closed following the crash, with BC Hydro crews on site to fix the downed power infrastructure. The accident was cleared by 7:15 a.m.

BC Hydro estimated that power will be restored to the approximately 12 customers affected by the outage by around 4 p.m. Tuesday.
