Five-year-old Harrison Trousdell had a special reason for donating half of his birthday money, $25, at the Montroyal fire hall.

Trousdell’s dad, Gordon, who died of cancer three years ago, was assisted by North Shore firefighters and paramedics during his illness.

As a way to say thank you to the first responders, Trousdell held a two-toonie birthday party in September for his friends. The youngster purchased a book with half the change and saved the rest for charity.

Trousdell was invited on Jan. 4 with his mom and sister to the Montroyal fire hall, where he presented his donation to the captain on duty and was given a tour of the fire hall and a fire truck.

“It was cool,” says Harrison of the experience.

Warmed by the kindergartner’s gesture, the men in the rubber boots made sure Trousdell left with a few keepsakes.

“We have had a couple kids do this in the past and we love it,” said Scott Ferguson, of the District of North Vancouver Firefighters Charitable Society.

Trousdell's donation is being forwarded on to the B.C. Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund.
