Fringe accents, bold hues hot for fall

It’s that exciting time of year when the fall shipments are coming in to Get Dressed boutique on Westview Drive, and the store’s manager, Rhonda Landy, is tearing the boxes open to reveal their fashionable bounty.

It’s that exciting time of year when the fall shipments are coming in to Get Dressed boutique on Westview Drive, and the store’s manager, Rhonda Landy, is tearing the boxes open to reveal their fashionable bounty.

Inside are sweaters and dresses in jewel tones – greens, burgundies and royal blues –plus loads of distressed denim items, including jean jackets “which are definitely going to be strong again this season,” she explains.

The “cold shoulder,” seen on summer’s banker-striped cotton blouses, is also transitioning into fall on knit tops and sweater dresses, says Landy.

Meanwhile, blogger Alexandra Grant, who grew up in Lynn Valley and runs the successful 41,000-follower fashion and lifestyle blog To Vogue or Bust, predicts retro looks and embellished classics will be hot.

While fashion generally takes nods from other eras, whether it’s the ’40s, ’60s or ’70s, for fall 2017 there’s a bit of historical mishmash: “We’re seeing an ’80s influence with metallic boots and ’50s-inspired jewelry, so the big bauble necklaces and earrings (that were a big thing) this summer are definitely coming into fall,” Grant explains.

The western trend that was everywhere this spring and summer is also “in.” “Chloé always does something Western-y but I know Calvin Klein had a few pieces that were more western-inspired this time too,” Grant explains. To channel the look, choose fall classics with a twist such as button downs with a cool lapel or a leather jacket adorned with fringe.

The skinny pants and jeans, that have reached “staple” status after many trendy years, and are being stacked onto fall shelves at Get Dressed, will be offset with lots of flamboyant embellishment up top, says Grant.

“There’s been more play with collars and sleeves the past few seasons (and) that seems to be a thing for fall, from what I’ve seen on the runways.”

Prim pieces such as Victorian collars will get an edge paired with more modern styles, such as a leather jacket, or a slouchy men’s crewneck sweater.

For guys, Grant notices “more boldness as far as colour-play.”

That means casual or slim-cut suits in autumnal colours such as deep purple. Also, going into the cooler months, men will continue mixing high/low and sporty/dressed-up pieces, pairing suits with sneakers.

All that flashy fashion will be juxtaposed with natural, subtle hair and makeup with some fiery autumnal tones mixed in. Think short, blunt cuts styled with beach waves, and glowing skin, bold brows and ample lashes which can be “achieved with a very voluminous mascara, lash extensions or the new (in-salon) Yumi Lash Lift,” says Emily Redlow, studio manager and senior makeup artist at Denise Elliot Beauty Co.

Subtle, coppery burnished makeup, is also hot. “A lot of beauty brands are plugging that (look), especially Urban Decay, who have a really amazing palette with all these autumnal reds and fiery oranges,” says Grant.

Speaking of fiery oranges: there’s nothing like a bright “Rorange” pout to energize your first few days back to work or school.
